Unable to install HP 1012 laser with XP Home

Everytime I try to install, I get "Error Message: Spooler Subsystem App Has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close." In the installation wizard window I get another error message, "The RPC server is unavailable."

I had the printer working with Win 98, but have been unable to get it going since I updated. Have even tried uninstalling XP, uninstalling printer, and then reinstalling XP and printer but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions??? Really appreciate it if anyone has a solution.

a) Run a System File Checker..... from the command prompt, type

sfc /scannow

(note the space between the c and the /)

b) Ensure the print spooler is started. From the command prompt, type

net start spooler

(and hit enter)

Now ensure that the printer is disconnected from the PC and uninstall and
reinstall...

Good morning and thank you for responding to my problem. When I ran the System File Checker, it prompted me to insert "Windows XP Professional Service Pack1." I'm running XP Home (updated from the Windows Update Site) but the only CD I have is the original XP Home.

Inserted XP Home disk and File Protection Window Process started and ran through completion. Displayed message asking me to wait while it verifies that all protected Windows files are intact. Process ran for 7 or 8 minutes and completed (my XP Home disk was active the entire time).

Then ran the "net start spooler" and received a message that Spooler was already started. Note: Print Spooler Service is set to "Automatic"

Tried to install printer and received the same failure message. The install process goes smoothly up until the program instructs me to connect the printer (to USB port). XP detects the printer, recognizes it as LaserJet 1012, and then I get the same "Spooler Subsystem App Has Encountered a Problem..." message. Something appears to be terminating the Print Spooler Service after it detects the proper printer and resulting in the "RPC Server is unavailable" message.

This problem is driving me crazy. (I have another printer, HP-LaserJet 5L, connected to LPT1, than I removed prior to trying the above process-I've tried it both ways & still NG. After failing again, I plugged in the 5L and XP automatically loaded the 5L...

Thank you again for the advice; can you offer any additional?

Prior to requesting help through this site I had reviewed the article you referenced and made the necessary changes to the registry. The only change I did not make related to a Lexmark printer service -- "LexBce Server" (that service was not listed on my computer and I looked for but didn't see a similar service that might be HP-related). But I did make all of the other registry changes and still could not install the printer.

I appreciate your suggestion and I reviewed the Knowledge Base thoroughly before trying this site.

Anything else that you can suggest is appreciated.

I have the same problem. E-mail to Microsoft resulted in the following
response: "We're workng on it." I don't know exactly what that means.
Download from HP didn't work.

Will keep yah posted. You do same, puh-lease....
