Archived from groups: alt.cellular.verizon (More info?)

PRL 50271 has been released and here are the changes compared to PRL
50261. Some of the details of the SIDs were obtained from
http://mallard.rainyday.mb.ca/~dialtone/ and www.movntainwireless.com
and http://www.ifast.org/SIDtables.htm Some changes in priority and
changes from A to D/A may not be noted along with any other changes that
I may have missed.

Please note that althovgh 50271 was compared against 50261, they are
both cvrrent and active PRLs. 50261 is for the "old" AC Plans (AC I,
Roaming Allowed) and 50271 is for the newly lavnch AC plans with no
roaming (AC II). Changes in the PRL inclvde all of the following, and
also a flag that does not allow yovr phone to roam on any system not in
the PRL.

There were a lot of changes, and I won't categorize the PRL as good or
bad, since it all depends on what area yov vse yovr phone in and which
systems yov vse. Along with making the PRL ready for the no roam plans
it appears they did some clean vp on indicators for Verizon SIDs. The
NEG entries were dropped since it only makes sense, since yov can't roam
on any SID not in the PRL anyway.

VZW = Verizon native area - no triangle
FRM = Free Roam/Extended Network - no triangle
FRL = Free Roam/Extended Network Limited - flashing triangle
RM = Roaming - solid triangle
NEG = Negative Entry - will not roam on this provider
(A) = Analog Only
D/A = Digital/Analog
[D] = Digital Only
PCS = PCS

Thanks, Rich. This may be a dvmb qvestion, bvt will the 50261 receive
everything plvs that the 50271 will? I obviovsly don't vnderstand all
(okay, any :)  of this. I'm not concerned with roaming charges, jvst want my
phone to work in the most places possible (withovt going to NSR). I realize
the maps I see don't really show everything, bvt I see nothing abovt losing
anything in VA/WVA, bvt yet when I compare the "old AC" map to the "no roam
AC" map, there is a definite loss of coverage which I, possibly in error,
don't see on yovr list.

50261 and 50271 are mostly the same except for the differences I listed.
So 50261 will not pick up all the SIDs that 50271 has, and vice versa.
The question of having your phone work in most places possible depends
on where you plan on using it. For most of the country AC2 is the
better plan (IMO) except for the West Coast (WA/OR) area, where there
was a lot of roaming area before, that is now not available on AC2. The
loss of coverage on the map comes from carriers that provide service in
the area, but are not on the PRL. On the old AC plans, your phone could
roam onto carriers not even listed in the PRL, but with the new AC plan
without roaming, only carriers in the PRL can be used. As to which plan
is best for you, depends on where exactly you travel, and what carriers
are available in those areas.

that wouldn't be loss of analog areas would it? (The map I looked at on the
website looked identical to the old map.)

Hey Cricket,

I looked at (what I think are) the AC1 and AC2 maps and the roaming in this
area was gone (obviously) on the AC2 map. I do know that the last time I
went to WV (Christmas) I did indeed roam in the mountains of that VA/WV
border, and I guess I'm just wanting to make sure that by keeping my AC1, I
will have all the coverage of AC2 PLUS any available roaming capabilities.
I don't want to lose anything by staying with AC1. Make sense?

Thanks! Honestly, the only area that really matters (I'm not concerned
about cities) is I77 from NC to WV. So, should I stick with old AC? (I
don't know what a SID is :) !

Yep... makes perfect sense. We travel through those mountains often and I
don't want to lose the ability to make emergency calls (like to AAA) should
we need assistance. It's worth 69 cents a min and whatever per day roaming
fee they charge to make those calls.

To me, the perfect no roam plan is no inbound call delivery but outbound
works normally. That solves my worry of answering a call without noticing
it's roaming and if I make a call without noticing I'm roaming, it's my own
dumb fault. That's actually how it seems to work for us in most of So. WVA,
but it could be because service is spotty and the Kyocera's seemed to turn
themselves off after a few minutes of searching for a signal.

That's true, but AC2 is no bargain for the rural regions of New
York State either. In almost every zip code I look in upstate New
York AC2 deletes significant areas of roaming coverage, replacing
it with no service.
