This may not be the proper place for this question but I figured I would
give it a try since it is firewall related.
I have often wondered why the shares on my LAN between XP Pro PCs were
often slow to establish, often a 10-20 second delay. This was true for the
first time accessed or after XX minutes had gone by since they were last
used. All shares are via TCP/IP, no Netbeui or other protocols installed.
I checked my Kerio 2.1.5 PFW rules and saw that
\windows\system32\svchost.exe
was set to permit all. I changed that rule and then I noticed that
svchost.exe wanting to access port 80 to other PCs on my LAN. WTF? So I
disabled port 80 access to my LAN for svchost and now all of my share
related delays have disappeared. All shares are now immediate and fast.
Ok, so what did I just do or fix?
I have used the latest AV defs for NAV 2004 along with the latest defs for
Pest Patrol and S&D - nothing found. Anybody know what is going on here?
Is there a Windows setting that I need to turn off? What am I missing?
QOS is unchecked. This is on a small home LAN, peer to peer sharing. TIA.
