sorry about the lame question, but where can i learn about the features of overclocking as they relate to eachother? i am new, i dont understand the relationship between, fsb, voltage and actual cpu overclocking. which has to increase/decrease and how much etc. i have an aopen ak73 proa with tbird 1.33 ayhja-y and p3 866 w/intel 810 board.

all right here is the deal your 1.33

it has a fsb of 133 and a mulitpler of ten making it a 1.33
10 X 133= 1.33 ghz

one the amd chip you can change the mulipler to what you want if it is unlocked

the mulipler on the p3 is always locked and can not be unlocked at all

raiseing the voltage helps the stablity of the chip but it also causes more heat so you need to watch it more

ok, im following that, but how is it that people increase their fsb speed, and how do they know what it is?

so the p3 cant be overclocked? how do you know, and how can you tell if a processor is "locked"?

thank you for your help, it is starting to make sense..

You want to go into the cmos or bios different peolpe call it different things and see if you can cange the fsb on the intel, on the amd go in and see if you can change the multiplier or the fsb thats the easiest way to overclock.

I've done so much,for so long,with so little,I'm now qualified to do anything,with nothing,forever!

ok, so let me see if i have this straight. generally speaking, i go into bios and increase fsb, which can be done in increments of 1mhz? then i can increase the multiplier (also in bios) to increase the cpu speed, then i want to increase the voltage to the cpu? thats it? i keep going till its not stable then back off a bit?

I am new as well, but I think I have a couple answers. The Pentiums usually have a locked multiplier, but you can still increase the FSB, which is done by jumpers on Mobo or in Bios, depending on your mobo. The increments are whatever your mobo allows, I don't know about 1mhz increments though. Whatever you do, multiply your multiplier with the FSB to get your Megahertz.

oooohh,ok... so the multiplier and fsb are independant of each other....two different settings, and a "locked" cpu is one that cant be overclocked.

...and i would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kids...

You are partially correct. Multiplier and FSB are independent, you can check them in the Bios/Cmos, restart your computer, and hit delete or F2 or whatever your computer says to hit to enter setup. In there you can check.

A 'locked' CPU can still be overclocked. Their multiplier is locked, but the FSB can still be increased.

Check out this site, has a few articles on overclocking:

the thing with the multipler being locked is that you may only be able to get so high in the fsb before the computer becomes unstable

the multiplers will make it so that you can get the highest possible speed

here is one more thing the pci and the agp clocks are run at a ratio to fsb like if you had a fsb of 100 you would have a ratio of 1/3 for the pci which would make it 33 which is the correct setting for the pci

it then cahnges to 1/4 at 133

the agp is 2/3 at 100
and 1/2 at 133

there are no more ratio adjust ment after 133

this can cause a problem in that your cards that are in these slot will not like the hiher frequnce that they are getting at one point and cause the computer to stall out or be unstable
