Alternatively, once you've found a few that you like, check the
manufacturer's websites.

If I remember correctly, any of the Epson printers in the LQ series are Dot
Matrix.

Unless you are dealing in multipart forms You can get laser printers for
less that Dot Matrix printers now. Unless you are wanting to buy an old
used one.

It is a rare impact dot matrix that cannot be made to work under Windows XP
in some fashion or other. However, if you want reasonable quality output,
try to get a 24 pin model. IBM ProPrinter series or Epson LQ series
(already mentioned by Parley), Panasonic (Raven, Roland) and Oki/Okidata are
good choices. Sometimes you can locate good ones at charity-function
"rummage" sales.

Once you have located some prospects, do check to make sure you can get a
suitable ribbon for it. Then, post a list and someone can see if a suitable
driver is available for it.

One more: Apple Imagewriter II runs as a C-Itoh 8510 if you have a spare
serial port.
Slow, noisy, and cheap!

Depends on what she wants to use it for. She should do the economics of
the printer and supplies for the intended use. Laser and Inkjet printers
have a high cost of supplies that might put a dot matrix into the ballpark
if speed, noise, etc. were not a factor.

This list is missing about 50 or 60 Epson printer drivers that are listed in
my copy of XP home. This includes all the FX printers supported.

In addition, one of the other printers(HP 932c) I have is explicitly
included in
the add printer wizard, and is not explicitly included in this list. Also,
HP 957 and HP 960 are in the wizard and not on the list(just printers nearby
the 932c).

My guess is that the final say about what drivers are included in XP should
be to check in the copy of XP(or other version of Windows) by trying
to install the printer driver for the printer that you are interested in.
