I am looking for a good how-to guide on setting up a small LAN party. I know the site is going to start running a series on the topic, but there must be some decent resources online already - especially for the beginer. After buulding my new high end rig i am slowly getting into gaming - LAN play being an interesting extension of this. Thanks for any help.

To tell you the truth... the best way to find out how to run a LAN is to go to one and ask a ton of questions. You can only learn so much online. That is why I will add links back t guys in the gaming community that will be able to take you to the next level. There is a lot to know and do in order to have a great LAN. The best way to learn is to go and even be on staff for an event as to learn first hand.

Got a LAN Party that you want people to know about?

Let me know about it.

Seeing that my North IL LAN got very little response, do you know of any other websites to find other gamers in your (my) area?

I'd rather be at Wrigley Field!

One guy you should contact is Hunter over at LANPartyCoalition.Com. He ran FWGG in Fort Wayne. You could try contacting one of LAN organizers that were covered in thTHG LAN Party articles. They would probably help if asked.
