Hello,

I have a mac backed up on a wd pasport. I want tp buy an hp laptop but it sounds like I would need to reformat the passport to be compatible with both. However, doing so would require an "erase" and Iwould lose my backed up data. Is there a way around this??

More about : passport backup disk

Do you know what format the passport is currently? If it is FAT32, which is how many drives are supplied, then your HP laptop will be able to read it.

Yes I believe that you will have to reformat your drive to work with the PC. Do you want to use your drive with both the PC and the MAC?

I have found that OSX will read and mount and NTFS volume, but time machine will not use it for back up.

It me it was easier just to have two backups, one for my PC and one for my Mac. It was a bit more expensive but I only needed a small hd to back up my mac, since only a portion of my HDD was actually full.
