Have installed above printer/copier/scanner/fax w/updated
CD from hp. Unable to send/receive faxes - "phone off
hook" message appears. Have done all hp/windows updates
and checked all connections. hp support has been no
help! Do I have to disable Windows fax feature; if so,
how?

The Windows XP Fax feature can ONLY use your HP multifunction printer if it
can act like an Fax modem; XP Fax CANNOT use the fax machine part of the
device in any other fashion. Using the Fax functions on the HP unit from
your computer will require third party software. Does HP include anything
like this on the CD that came with the unit? If not and if there's no other
third party support for the device, then you'll need to get a fax modem, if
you want to use XP Fax; a Fax modem is the ONLY device that XP Fax knows how
to work with.
