This topic was as close to my problem as I could find.
Does anyone know where I can find information on configuring a Netgear RT314 router? The user guide and resource CD cover the basics but are terrible for the advanced features. I mainly need to know which ports to open and which to close for maximum security.

Thanks

Ok, basically you need to find a list of what ports are commonly used by computers over the internet. For instance, port 21 is FTP. Now, if you want to use FTP, then leave it open. Otherwise, close it off. You can specify incoming or outgoing, so if you're worried about someone breaking in over FTP, just disable incoming FTP, and it won't affect your CuteFTP sessions.

I only want to close off all incoming (ftp, http, etc. for maximum security). How do I do that? For FTP, I know to enter 21 in the 'Port' section, but what do I enter in the 'IP Address' section? The default is 0.0.0.0, which I assume means the port is open.

The IP address is like a street address on the internet. Every computer is assigned a separate one. There should be a way to block off a port completely, not just for one IP like it seems you're doing.

Go here to learn the basics of what a firewall does and why it's needed. I couldn't find anything for specifically setting up your router, but if I see something I'll post it. You could always buy a book on firewalls.
