I've just finished the cooling aspects of new PIII GHZ system (Aopen HX-08 case).
My <i>first</i> system.
It looks something like <A HREF="http://www.pctweaker.co.uk/articles/case_mod/hx08_mods.htm" target="_new">this</A>

Instead of a 120mm fan on front, I have an 80mm one and an 80mm one on the side right over the CPU. I used <A HREF="http://www.quietpc.com/casefans.html" target="_new">these</A> case fans with filters for the intakes and one of <A HREF="http://www.quietpc.com/cpucooling.php" target="_new">these</A> for the HSF. They are <i>so</i> quiet.

Before with just the HSF and the case open the temps were

System Temp 1 (not sure about this one) = 42C
System temp 2 (probe on chipset) = 45C
CPU temp = 39C

Now they're at 31C, 35C & 29C respectively.

I know you'll say "So what!", but I just thought I'd mention it.

Looks sweet! Nicely done - but is it noisy?

<b> <font color=blue> This is geeky stuff - but sure is fun! </font color=blue> </b>

Nope.

4 x case fans working at 0.6 - 0.9 W output.
CPU fan at 4000rpm

I asked my girlfriend what she thought of the noise and she said
"I can't here anything!"

Oh! I opened the window and the temps dropped another 2C.

I can't wait until winter.

Well done!
It is nice to achieve lower temps, but what was the room temp by chance?

Medication helps

Usually about 20C.

In the winter time its around 5C on a normal day and below to as low as -5C when it gets bad.

So around January I'll be giving the overclocking a good run for its money.

Did something similar w/ extra fans- except it was a P1 166. I butchered 5 power supplies and used their fans, and installed a very very oversized heatsink (it was originally meant for a dualie system of some kind). In addition, I placed some small fans around teh heatsink. The thing is pretty cold, even after I left it oced at 200mhz over 2 weeks by mistake. One of my teachers was on the intel team that designed p1, so I will ask him what the P1 was meant to go up to when oced, and will try maybe 300Mhz or higher. Think it'll work with all the cooling?

When I rule the world, Apple will only mean the fruit.

Those old power supplies are a good source for fans ....
