Unable to join a local IP game on AOE 2

We have two computers with AOE 2 uploaded and working on single player. When we have tried to play a game between the two computers they have no problem finding each other but when a game is attempted to be joined then it attempts to connect the two for a few seconds, but eventually comes up with a message 'Unable to join game'.

I have seen there have been similar questions in the past but wondering if anyone has found a way to do it recently.

Do these computers have software firewalls installed? If so, you may have to go into the firewall settings and create a rule allowing AoEII to accept incoming and send outgoing connections.
