I just bought one of those new-fangled mini ITX boards from Via. I'm planning on putting it in a prototype that I'm building for my company. I like that it had a TV out integrated on it. I'm going to use it for data logging and running some little movies that the Execs can oooh and ahhh over. They like color movies on their devices.

My friend Jon and I want to put one in a lunchbox. The ultimate LAN machine. The video isn't that great but just the sight of a system in a lunchbox is awesome.

There's that Biostar MiniATX nForce2 board with integrated audio, GeForce4 MX, firewire, USB 2.0, and just about everything. That thing has decent graphics and is only 9.5"x9.5", so it might fit in a slightly larger lunchbox... That's prolly my choice for a little project I'm gonna be doing...

I've got some vintage lunchboxes That might add to the "mysique". I've got an original "Black Hole" lunchbox from the disney movie. I used to have an Atari lunch box, but its gone now...that would have been sweet...Hmmm...Maybe crazypaint could redeem themselves.....(evil thoughts)...hmmm...

Enjoy yourself as you gaze at the powerhouse that the ITX Eden platforms are: http://www.tomshardware.com/mainboard/20030326/index.html

Not sure what video that thing has, but I used to think these micro computers were cool until I tried using it for games and movies. 8MB onboard crap. It couldn't even play a divx movie let alone a game. It had a AGP slot but you'd need a 1" high card to fit it in there.
Complete crap. And they sell them for $1200 bucks.
I bought mine for $130.00? The onboard video is called castlerock. I didn't know that Steven King was into GPUs. I heard that the next generation graphics from Via will be called the Fraggle Rock.

OMG! And we just lost half the crowd because they have no clue what or who Fraggles are! LOL!

It just arrived...wow...I know the performance isn't the same as a normal desktop, but I've got to admire the engineering behind the form factor. If you think about it, this board has more features than any other mobo out there....and its the smallest. It has USB 2.0, 6 channel Audio, video with hardware MPEG decoder, LAN, Processor, Svideo/composite out, and Fire wire.

The problem is all of these high-tech feature suffer on the C3. They are simply NOT being fed right by the horsepower. It is worse than a Celeron stripped of cache and FPU, it can't even play movies right. (see video benchmarks)

Well Here are the benchmarks. I had to go through quite a bit to get them to run, but it worked after I got the updated drivers and directX on it. One thing I can say is that the ITX never crashed, froze or otherwise. One thing I didn't like is that it will not allow you to overclock in the bios. It will, however, let you adjust the memory voltage. Also, the CPU gets HOT!!! At idle it was a constant 55 degrees C.
Setup:
CPU: VIA C3 600mhz
Memory: 256 MB Kingston Hyperx PC 3000 DDR. Set at most aggressive timings.
OS: Windows ME (only extra OS I have...sorry)
I also disabled every onboard peripheral I could during the tests
PC Mark scores
CPU: 568
Memory: 619
I have the individual test scores if anyone is interested
3DMark2001se
Well, the first thing I noticed is that the splash screen was not fadding in smoothly...This made me laugh as it did not bode well for the rest of the test. Here are the scores...I can still here the motherboard's screams in my ears.....MUAHAHAHAHA
Game1 Car Low detail: 5.1 fps LOL!!!
Game1 Car High detail: .7 fps
Game2 Dragothic Low: 6.2 fps Now were blazing!!!
Game2 Dragothic High: 2.1 fps
Game3 Lobby Low: 11.8 fps
Game3 Lobby High: 5.8 fps
Game4 Nature: not Supported (read:uncle!!!)
Fill rate single texture 78.9 MTexels/sec
Fill rate multi texture 104.9 MTexels/sec
This is where it gets good!!!
High Polygon cnt 1 light .9 MTriangles/sec
High polygon cnt 8 light (the text read N/A, but I sawe it run. The screen only changed 3 times throught the entire test...I though the southbridge was going to explode!!!)
Enviroment Bump map not supported
DOT3 Bump Map 8.1 fps
Vertex shader 4.5 fps
Pixel Shader not supported
Advanced pixel shader take a wild guess
point sprites .3 Msprites
THe final score probably set a record for the lowest score ever recorded....Here it is... 403 marks. I hoped you get a good laugh over this, because I was cracking up watching it run. The car chase scenes were so slow they looked like the image quality tests on my other computer. Oh well...10 minutes of screen shots was all I got for my trouble. Anybody for a game of Pong? I've got my new Via ITX...

I have a CD full of ROMs that you can probably play.
