Since Toms' article about the results of CPU fan failure, I am uncertain whether to use P4 or AMD TB for a friends business application. Any help appreciated.

yeah that thing of Toms has scared a lot of people, I've NEVER seen a heatsoink fall off. I'd go for the Athlon, get an Athlon xp if your budget allows.

What kind of buisness application?
Duron might be enough.

My relative runs a bar in Ireland and uses the PC for stock management, accounting and menu preparation. He has limited local PC support. My aim was to give him best "bang for the buck" and say 3 years of reliable service. Hence my worry about the effects of fan failure on the CPU. Many thanks for your reply Uncle Joe.

Can I assume that the AMD TB,XP or Duron will not fry after fan failure? I intend fitting a Thermalright SK6 but am unsure of the likely fan failure rates. Many thanks for your note Matthew.

If the fan fails, the thermal diode on teh XP will make it shut down in time. Don't worry about it. When carrying teh PC around, just make sure the heatsink is on before u use it. That article Tom had didn't who real-world conditions- heatsinks don't just fall off.

U got a problem?! Then dial 1800-328-7448!

Howeve3r, a Duron may not be teh smartest thing, considering an Athlon of the same clockspeed in some cases is actually cheaper. hehe, the way supply and demand works.

My point was that there is no need for high performance
CPU for buisness applications. Text processing can be done
on Pentium 75. :)

OK. P75 may be overkill, but the point still is that there
is no need to buy latest/fastest/priciest CPU to run
office software.

Just get a duron 800 or something like that and pair it with and ECS k7s5a and ddr. it's cheap and if it does happen to fry what's it going to cost you to replace the cpu....$40 the whole setup with video, ram, hdd, cdrom, case should cost you around 350~400 depending on what you get.

Building a comp for my friend, this is what he'll be getting for $500: 1.2 Ghz T-Bird, FIC AD11 w/ 512 PC2100 DDR, GF2 GTS, 60GB HDD, case, 350W PSU. The sound card/system are left out since he needs pro equipment.
