How do you format a laptop hard drive for ps3

Hello,
How do you get the new hard drive to format on the ps3

make sure you have the latest firmware place onto a usb stick (not sure if it has to be in the root of the usb stick or in folder \PS3\UPDATE\), then install the hdd into the ps3, connect your gamepad via the USB port and follow the onscreen instructions for initialising the new hard disk.
