Port Forwarding in P2P Applications

Hi All
I had some basic questions about P2P Applications and Nat Travarsal.
If I am behind a NAT and want my PrivateIP (192.168.X.X) to listen for
an incomming request ,Is port forwarding the only option ?Also if i
want to reach a simlar service running on Some other Private IP the
how do i reach them ?
In the Essence is it mandatory for all P2P apps behind NAT to have
such arangements .I am in process of developing a similar application,
after many days of searching ,i came to know about Port forwarding ,
What trouble me most is that one can not expect evey user to be
competent enough to set up a port forwarding on their NATs. Is there
any way we can do it programatically.
i.e some protocol /method by which ** the application ** can
configure the NAT to forward the request on a particular port to a
private IP on which it(the application )is running .
This is a major set back which i can see as far as the success of a
P2P app is concern .
Any suggestion/information on NAT Travarsal would be helpfull.
Thanks
Avizz
