Anyone know what the different types do? Can they be used as a substitute
for a rare? Eg can a glowing stone be used instead of coral? Or are they for
imbuing?

They are for imbuing. An alchemist has to make an extract from it and
then it can be used by another crafter to make an item. Each tier has
a different type of item. Tier 2 has glowing flower/stone/scale and
tier 3 is sparkling flower/stone/scale. Not sure what is after in t4
and t5.

I have used a couple so far.

You can imbue items with additional stats, the stats increase with the level
of the stone/tooth/flower/scale.

Alchemists create extracts from the items which are then used by other
tradeskillers.

The specialist books can be purchased from the tradeskill vendor (basic
level 10 one).

My jeweller has made imbued pristine rings of turquoise so far with an
additional +4 intelligence.

T4 is Glittering and T5 is Luminous.
