I have a similar problem. I have a HP Laserjet 1010, which worked well...
and then suddenly it stopped working. Apparently the spool service is not
running. When I tried to download SP2 I just received a message that said
"error occured". This makes my Windows experience very uncomfortable, as
such that I am considering switching to another operating system and
recommending other operating systems to all of my clients.

See Bruce Sanderson's article about completely cleaning printer drivers...
you'll notice that the spool service can be dependant on other services,
therefore if the other service is not starting or is corrupted, the print
spooler cannot function correctly.

If all these things do not work, is it ok to open regedit and find all
lexmark and other printer entries and just delete them?
