Not very helpful Im afraid, it goes through to step 3 of 4 (installing), MS
finds hardware then a modal window pops up with statement
'ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE'. The window header says
'C\temp\photosmart\setup\hpzmsi01.exe -m webu -1 ENU -f C:\winxp\hphins02.dat
-Validate ...'

Hi,

To resolve this issue, update the drivers for the USB devices that are
connected to the computer.

To update these drivers, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, Run, type devmgmt.msc, and click OK.
2. Double-click the type of device that you want to update.
3. Double-click the specific device that you want to update.
4. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

Follow the instructions in the Hardware Update Wizard. Repeat steps 2
through 5 for each USB device.

NOTE: You can also install Windows XP SP2, and then disconnect and
reconnect the USB devices that are connected to your computer. By
doing this, you start the Plug and Play utility. The Plug and Play
utility updates the version numbers for the drivers.

The only usb device I have is the printer. I went to properties tab of the
printer and selected update driver and got taken into 'install hardware
wizard'. Sysxtem then informs me that it cannot install correctly because
drivers not found.

Don't understand what you mean 'you can also install XP SP2.....'

I already have XPSP2 installed, do you mean install it again ?

He means go into Device Manager, scroll down until you find the entry for
the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and update the USB drivers.
