Hello,
Ive been reading through the newsgroup and can't find a situation quite like
mine so I hope someone can help shed some light on this.

We have two laptops, a Personal and a Business laptop.
Personal: XP Home SP1, ICF off, connected via 802.11b to router, has HP
Photosmart 7960 locally attached (USB)
Business: XP Pro SP1, ICF off, Ethernet connection to router, logs on to
domain over Internet.

The printer is shared and until recently the Business laptop was printing to
it without issue. The main user was out of town for several weeks while two
other people used the computer and during that time they had trouble
printing to it on the Personal laptop. (We were told this after the fact)
Apparently they went through reinstallation of printer software with an HP
technician and were back in business. We discovered later that they had the
printer cable plugged in to the other USB port and so I guessed that was why
they hadn't been able to pint to it. I made sure the printer was again
shared and added it back as a network printer on the Business laptop.

Printing went OK for a while but the main user had to suddenly stop printing
a 6-page document from the Business laptop, and since she didn't know how to
cancel a print job from Printers and Faxes or from the printer, she simply
turned the printer off in the midst of the job. That's when the Business
laptop became unable to print to it.

I have been over there to try and fix the problem three times now and even
after I get it to work again, it stops working within a day. Since we
haven't installed SP2 and ICF is disabled I'm at a loss for why this is
happening.

I've deleted the network printer and re-added it. Once the user got a
message about the print spooler preventing the computer from entering
standby mode and the corresponding entry in Event Viewer said that the
"spooler service vetoed a power event request". I completely uninstalled the
HP photosmart software, restarted the Personal laptop, and reinstalled it,
then re-added the network printer back on the Business laptop. In each case
when I finished what I did, the Business laptop was able to print. For good
measure, I've made sure to both restart and put to sleep BOTH laptops after
successful printing, then testing network printing again afterwards. It has
worked fine until I get a message from the user within 24 hours that once
again it's stopped working.

Anyone have any idea what is going on? Both systems have been fully
virus-scanned, spyware-scanned, and have ample resources.

Thanks.
