Printer settings could not be saved operation could not be..

I keep getting the following error message if I want to
change any setting on my printer:

"Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not
be completed"

The printer is connected to my USB port, and I use XP
home. Because I first wanted to share this printer with
others in the apartment, I shared it, but since we're all
using the same internet connection through a router and
that is supposed to cause all kinds of security issues, I
want to roll back the sharing. But like I said, that
doesn't work. Anyone got ideas on this?
