Your question

Why am I getting FPS drops?

So I upgraded to a desktop computer a while ago and I find myself getting FPS drops on games like TF2 and DotA 2 for reasons unknown. Though I do know that I more than pass the recommended requirements for those games. I have tried some little fixes like turning down the graphics a bit and upping my GPU fan speed, but I still get the same annoying FPS drops. Help would be very appreciated, thank you!

What are your temps for the GPU and CPU? What is your PSU brand and watts? Have you had good fps on this rig or has it been bad all the time? What are they dropping from?

Are all of your drivers up to date? I mean all of your drivers not just the GPU. Have you added any new programs that are running in the background?

Sometimes added programs can cause the CPU to bottle neck while they are running in the back ground. Get back to us with the answers.

its your cpu, you are getting a bottleneck, your gpu is fast and its not working in fully potential and your cpu cant keep up with it so thats why you getting fps drops at some points or low fps.

*how to fix it?
-lower the resolution and turn off AA, that will help a little bit
-close any app that uses cpu, like AV etc..
-get AMD quad core cpu or get intel sandy / ivy bridge is more powerful than amd cpus but that will make you change the motherboard.

My temps tend to be pretty low. Around 40c idle, around 60c during play. I do not know my PSU brand, and I can't check, but it is a 500w PSU. I've always had this drop problem. For TF2 for example - It would be at 60+ in a spawn room, then when I go out in the map and get in a good gun fight, it drops to around 30-40ish, which is odd since both my processor and graphics card pass recommended for TF2.

Yes, all of my drivers are up to date. I haven't added any new programs in the background recently.

Ah! I turned my res down a bit and completely turned of AA, and I got a good stable FPS. :D
Closing my AV helped a bit as well.

Thanks a bunch man. I added a quad AMD to my wishlist, and ill hopefully obtain it soon.

Let us know how things are going and if you are up and running? The AMD quad core are very low priced compaired to the Intel ones. Good luck
