bad mainboard ??? or not ???

the story:
I supplied a friend with a new mainboard (Gigabyte 6VTXE) he wanted to upgrade his computer.
he kept everything from his old system except the mainboard.
after he installed the mainboard the computer didn't started anymore and the power supply was smoking in an instant
so all the PCI cards are not working now, the CD-Writer is not working and of course the mainboard
yet the AGP VGA, HDD and CD-ROM are working.
I have opened the PS and it is burned on the 5V part.
he claims that he installed everything correctly (he has the necessary experience)
the question:
is it possible that the PS burned because a bad mainboard? or it was a pure coincidence and everything happened because of the PS - the PS is not a quality one ?
I will be grateful for a documented reply

i saw a powersupply spark and smoke up a room at frys.....
it was pretty bad...
but everyone figured that the psu was just bad, or that the motherboard was not working properly...
so yeah...the psu is probably screwed up, and when a psu goes, sometimes the mobo can too.
