Unable to install software for HP Officejet T45

I have a HP T45 which was connected to a Windows NT machine originally. I
have moved it to a XP professional machine but when I try to install the
correct software from HP I get an error message "16 bit subsystem
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt" The system file does not support MS-DOS or
windows applications. I have been working with HP but am getting nowhere. I
had installed the generic HP Officejet driver but it would print in black and
white only so I removed that driver. I also got the same error message when I
enered the word "command" in the run program box on the start menu.
Any thoughts?
