Hi Guys:

One of you suggested, using an adpater to use a medium speed 80mm fan on CPU heatsink instead of the 60mm high speed fan that came stock on my Thermaltake Volcano 6CU+. I've seen these adaptors and have seen a few web sites, that have the CPU fan blowing air onto the heatsink instead of away drawing the heat from the CPU.

Which is the proper mounting position of the CPU fan? Blowing onto the heatsink or drawing the hot air away from the heatsink?

Thanks,
Claude

In general, it is usually better to have the fan blowing onto the heatsink.

See Anandtech's review of a lot of different HSF(Heatsink Fan) combinations.

The best performance was from the Alpha PAL8045 in combination with the Delta. The best cooling for that HSF combo is expulsion. That is, having the fan blow air onto the HSF instead of drawing the air from the heatsink which is called induction. See here for specification on three fan combinations with the Alpha PAL8045.

I would also like to point you to another way of using a 80mm fan instead of using a funnel. See here for another way to fit a 80mm fan to a 60mm setup.
