are all 80mm case fans created equal?

hi all.

i'm still trying to cool a P4 system. i haven't bought any fans (tehre are fans on PSU and CPU) because there are so many options and etc. that i am reading about here.

i guess i'm a newbie to case cooling, because i never thought i needed a fan, but i do because everything in my comp is burning hot (hard drives, cds, case --> it is now left open).

so i have spots for 2 80mms, bottom-front and mid-rear. i was going to buy regular 80mm fans, but are there such thing as fans that will slow down if the heat level is cooler, etc. i have an old IBM and it's 80 mm fan has a little "fuse-like" thing that i would've taken to be nothing, until i read here that it may be a thermometer?

what type of fans should i buy? as in when i walk into my local computer parts store/ask someone to order for me, what should i ask for? keeping in mind that i mind the noise, but not enough to go out and buy silent PSUs and cases, and the computer will never be overclocked.

Thanks in advance!

The objective for you is 1) hight CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) and 2) low db's. (Decibles)

You probably want...

1. Sanyo-Denki(SANYO 109R0812H402)

2.<A HREF="http://www.inflowdirect.com/panfba0lowou.html" target="_new">Panaflo FBA08A12L</A> It is 21db but only 24CFM.

3. <A HREF="http://www.inflowdirect.com/sun80quietca.html" target="_new">Sunon KD1208PTB3-6</A> It gives off 28db but 30CFM.

<font color=blue><b>Note: Generally you have give up CFM for low noise.</font color=blue></b>

4. <A HREF="http://www.inflowdirect.com/pap80quietfa.html" target="_new">Papst 8412NGL</A> Papst are probably the best for low noise and high CFM. (Panaflo are up there too. -That is for all of the Panaflo junkies.) This fan gives 19CFM but only <b><font color=red>12 db</font color=red></b>.

There are many others but the order in which I listed them is not my order of choice. That is up to you. This will give you an idea of what to ask for. If you go into a store you should ask to look at their supplier catalogs. This will tell you all of the specs for every fan. (Size, CFM, db(s), etc. Happy hunting!

for a P4 system...you only really need just one case fan.
specifically...an 80 mm case fan.
you can get either a 3 pin or a 4 pin connector....either one will do.
the 3 pin you connect to your motherboard (you can monitor the fan speed in the bios).
the 4 pin you connect to your power supply using the molex connectors. (you cant monitor the fan speed with 4 pin case fans).
in any case fan...you'll want to look in the following 3 areas:

1) fan speed-faster is usually better but is not always good (fans are usually rated for around 2000 rpm to around 3000 rpm).
2) how much air it moves- 30 CFM is good (not sure what CFM stands for).
3) how much noise it makes-you dont wanna noisy fan cuz it can drive you crazy. noise is measured in decibels (db i think). low 20's are good.

anyways....this is getting too long...here...have a look at <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=127&manufactory=1400&DEPA=1" target="_new">this</A>
as for the one fan that you might buy...put that fan at the back of the case (right under the power supply) and have that fan blowing air out of the case (ie. exhaust fan).
just make sure its an 80 mm fan.
