Lexmark X73 installation problems

I have the above printer and it has worked perfectly for the last two years
with Windows XP. Since XP SP2 was downloaded I have had massive problems. I
uninstalled the SP2 package, downloaded the drivers from Lexmark including
the patch. I may be a bit thick but my machine starts to install the printer
okay and then the machine crashes. I've executed the patch and then tried to
install again but no success. I also get several messages stating my
computer is recognising new hardware, Image and Printer.

Please, please could someone help before I completely dump my printer and
buy a new one. It was working perfectly and it seems a shame to get rid.
