using silicon for chip protection

ive seen some people/sites say that they use silicon on the chips pins to prevent anythign from shorting out if too much artic silver adhesive was applied...i was just wondering why kind of silicon do they use?

I think what you are refering to is DIELECTRIC GREASE. A type of silicone grease to insulate arround coils, distributor caps etc.
Now most peltier and Vaporchill users will fill the socket full of this. They also coat the pins and bottom of the processor. This stops water from condensing on the parts it is applied to. I also assume it could be used to cover the bridges on the athlon processors . This would somewhat protect them if too much artic silver is applied. But it would take a lot of A/S to squeeze out all the way to the bridges.

I aint signing nothing!!!
