Windows explorer constantly crashing

Hello,

So I keep getting this annoying pop-up about every 5 seconds that says "windows explorer has stopped working" then it restarts, the taskbar flashes and it repeats again and again and again. Every time it closes whatever windows I have open as well.

This happened before and it was due to a virus posing as windows explorer. I deleted it before but I forget how I did it, it was something along the lines of running a program on windows that allows you to explore what seemed like every aspect of the OS.
Please help, it's very very annoying. thanks!

also, i'm running 64-bit Windows 7 if that helps

have you scanned for virus? you could also try running Malwarebytes.

install and run it in Save Mode

you could also use Firefox or Google Chrome which are both faster than IE8

Try running a windows repair.

If that doesn't solve it, try running through the malware guide in my signature.

it's not Internet explorer that's the problem, its the actually windows explorer that's giving me the problem
