Sorry, but this is kind of a noob question. I don't own an xp processor yet. How are you supposed to apply the thermal compound and the heatsink to the processor when there are those black circular pads and all that circuitry? i'm just wondering because all i see are pictures of processors (like the one here ) and i see no way that i can apply or attach something to the back of that w/o messing anything up. Is there some kinda metal lid that goes on top of that or something? Thanks. Mnx4

the circular pads are just cushion that protects the CPU die from extreme forced caused by the heatsink. you only apply thermal compound on the die( the sqaure in the middle) itself not the ceramic part of the cpu, when u apply thermal compound such as AS3, u want it as thin as possible and evenly spread out.

so is the only hot part of the cpu the die? doesn't the rest of it get hot? do shims help any or are they also for protection?

Most heat generates from that die. That's why it needs to be cool fast by HSF.

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.
