Ok after a year i return to propse my same problem.

Motherboard: Intel 440BX AGP
CPU Type: Intel Pentium III 500MHZ
Computer Type: Dell XPST500

Ok obviously my problem is i can't overclock this son of a b. Dell says theres a jumper, but won't say where. Any skimatics i get don't show this jumper. Theres no settings in my damn bios, even if i flash. No programs will increase my FSB, is there anyway to O/C this damn thing???

Thank you in advance,

Steve

Maybe maybe not. First you need to determine which clock generator your board uses. You can use Sisoft Sandra for this. Then you will have to try SoftFSB,CPU Boost,CPU Clock or one of the other software overclocking utilities available on the net.

Depending on the clock generator you have, depends on whether you can overclock or not. If your clock generator only supports 100,133 fsb you may have a problem .Most Katmai core p3s will only do 600 to 650 with voltage mods.

I aint signing nothing!!!

Ok i will go look up that one prog and find out the info u mentioned, then post it back here. As far as softfsb, that and my damn dell have never gotten along lol. No matter what it always just freezes, i'll be posting the information shortly.

Also for what its worth i tried that on WIN98 too, so its not just ma XP. I am currently running Windows Experience(XP) Pro Corporate Edition.

Thnx,

Steve

Ok i got the info off sandra, i'm listing anything i think might help u guys help me as the program popped it out.

System Clock Generator:
-Generic PLL-IC-WO
Software Programmable = YES
Read-Back Support = NO

System Chipset:
Model = Intel 82443BX/ZX 440BX/ZX CPU to PCI Bridge
Bus(es) = ISA X-Bus AGP PCI USB SMBus/12c
Front Side Bus Speed = 1X 100MHZ (100mhz data rate)

NOTE: Due to the one ram chip i use the bios says 100mhz FSB assumed, so it may be a low readout mislead by that chip?.

In-Order Queue Depth = 4 Req(s)
Multiplier = 1/1X
Refresh Rate = 15.60

System SMBus Controller 1
Model = Intel PIIX4 SMBus / compatible
Speed = 16KHZ

Hope this helps me(and you)

You called? You cannot overclock that motherboard (the Dell version of the SE440BX) beyond 100MHz FSB in BIOS or by jumper, your only hope is to use SoftFSB or CPUFSB to overclock it in windows.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Yea i called dell lol. Ok i took to some lil playing with SoftFSB and CPUFSB last night and heres what i got.

Both programs maxed out(as in messed up) if i tried to get 124 fsb. It worked at any below that(meaning i can't o/c past 512mhz!), but when i tried 124 i got a blue screen of death from windows XP saying it had dumped my memory. I usually get this when i run like every program i own : /

Then if i try 133 fsb it freezes flat out. my question is, well i have a few:

1) Could the 124 BS error be windows XP? I am considering going back to windows 98, but want some input first.

2) I have a 32mb ram chip i put in there and now it says on load, "100mhz assumed". Before this chip it never did that, maybe thats restricting it?

3) It seems i have a LOCKED(wtf) 5.0 multiplyer setting, is there anyway to raise this on this motherboard??

Thats all i can think of right this moment.

Thnx in advance,

Steve

1.) All modern CPU's have locked multipliers and only AMD's can be unlocked
2.) Your problem is likely caused by PC100 memory, you should have all PC133
3.) 133FSB may not work if the program cannot change the PCI divider.
4.) Any large increases may require more CPU core voltage, which has to be done by modifying the chip, and often only requires a piece of tape to cover one or two connectors.
5.) You may have an option in BIOS to adjust the PCI divider, check the bottom front corner area of the board for a single jumper that says "cfg", it should allow you to get into a special configuration mode in BIOS. For 133MHz FSB you should have the PCI set to 1/4 if possible.

ok i removed my two pc100 32mb ram sticks so i had one 64 pc133 chip in it. I booted her up and put the FSB to 124 and BAM. She hit 617.sumthing and stayed stable for about ten seconds and i got the BS again. I took a shot of the screen and put it up here: <A HREF="http://dreagon.netfirms.com/1.JPG" target="_new">http://dreagon.netfirms.com/1.JPG&lt;/A>

sorry bout the shity colors on that SS my dig cam f'd it up. Now if i try 133 she crashes. So if i had another 64mb pc133 maybe it would work, as i could be underrammed now?

Also do you know any guides for a pentium three that would tell me what pins to block? if it matters mines in a SECC2 package and i think is slot 1. It looks like an overgrown heat sink and goes in sideways. Hell i don't care if my FSB is -133 as long as i can get at least 550mhz out of this mofo. Also when i had it at 512 it still said 500 in the bios, does that mean when i re-start its un-apply'n or is it just my damn dell mod'd bios?

Also if it would help i'm half tempted to order a new bios chip thats not dell'd so to speak.

Thnx crash, u have no idea how much i appreciate the help!

Steve

opening that case, not to mention overclocking it, kinda voids that warranty, and its so old (p3 500) it is probably nearly out of warranty already

Actualy i still have two years left on my warrenty. And opening my case far from voids it as i am permitted to do my own repairs to the system. The only way to void it is if they can prove i broke the guidlines, and that is very hard to do, not to mention i know people that work for dell. I'm sticking too.

hey thats not bad, i remeber dealing with compaq was a total nightmare. the things u had to do just so they would send a damn install cd! forget getting them to replace a part, half the time they sent the wrong parts! once i ordered a processor board for a server and they sent an io board instead. yes i used to do repairs for compaq, i hate compaq, a lot. sounds like dell isnt so spartan though. good luck on that thing though, id never dare try to mess with an OEM board LOL =c)

I hate dell tho, and i know they hate me. I have a warrenty that, say a part breaks, they send me a new one overnight and i send back the old, at no cost to me. Well i have replaced(broken or not :) ) about everything in my computer except for the case itself. I can't replace that cause its had some serious moddies on it lol.

My freinds actualy crack on me alot because, get this: I look like, sound like, act like, have the same kind of computer as, etc, the Dell guy. You know steve from the commercials? and we have the SAME NAME. Hence my siggy, i think they cloned me as revenge O.o

Dell is very good about sending the right parts and its usualy overnight/next day shipping. No complaints yet. I am working on getting a 256mb RAM chip (pc133) so i can run all pc133, hopefully that'll let her oc some more.

I have the same model dell I use in my office. This box is DESIGNED for Win 98 and nothing more. I tried running Win2K on the darn thing and had nothing but problems...If you really want to run XP think really hard about replaceing the mobo and cpu with an AMD. You CAN overclock them and have some time left over to have some fun! BTW, Dell (or any Major Mfgr) is not going to help "mess" with their product either in or out of Warrenty. Best of Luck

Where in SiSoftware Sandra will i find the clock generator used by my mainboard, under which category?
