I just got the computer back from my tech. The Hard Drive needed to be
reformatted to fix performance problems. What he did was to transfer
the EQ game on to his server and then partitioned the HD before
putting th EQ game back on the computer. When wee try to load the game
now we get the message :
Login rejected. The clients version does not match the servers. Please
re-run the patcher...."
First of all I have no clue what that means. 2nd question I have is if
we reinstalled from the original CD would Ryan have to start all over
again or are his files for as far as he got on line? Or were they on
the HD? Does he have to start from scratch again? He has spent a LOT
of time on EQ and has 3 advanced characters. I am not qualified enough
to get this going for him so all your help is appreciated. I looked at
some of the forums but the language is way too technical for me and
him.
How do I get him back to where he was so he can continue from where he
left off?

Don't worry - all the data about his characters is stored on the
Everquest host servers, NOT on his PC's hard drive - his characters
will be safe and sound, XP-wise and equipment-wise, exactly as he left
them.
When the drive was partitioned, was the Everquest folder put back into
the same location on the hard drive as it was originally? If it was
originally in C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest, for example, it has to
go back there, not on another partition or location.
Other than that, I would think running the patcher would fix the
problem you mentioned.

All his character info is safe on the EQ servers. His exp, equipment,
money, etc will be there. If the patcher isn't working you may want to just
bite the bullet and reinstall the software and download the updates. Sure
it may take a few hours but it may be the least aggravating course of
action.

All the information about xp, equipment, etc., is on the EQ servers.
After all, it wouldn't make sense to let you modify files on your own
computer and suddenly make your character be level 70 with lots of
new equipment!
HOWEVER, most of the information about your user interface is stored
on YOUR computer. Things like hotkeys, option settings, and how you
have your windows arranged. Those are in files in the EverQuest
folder with names like charactername_servername.ini, and
UI_charactername_servername.ini, and also eqclient.ini (which holds
settings that apply to all the characters). So you might want to
save those files and copy them back once you've reinstalled.
If you've saved any screenshots, you might also want to salvage those.
They're in the screenshots folder inside the EverQuest folder.

Mick,
I have rebuilt my computer several times throughout my EQ career and I know
that it works to save the EQ directory and then copy it back to the new
comp.
I'm guessing that your shortcut is pointing to the game exe file rather than
to the patcher exe file. I'm at work so I can't look up what it should be
pointing to, but maybe some other person will check their set-up. If not,
I'll try to remember to check when I get home in 4-5 hours.

Mick,
The file that your shortcut needs to point to is everquest.exe

How come it seems like it took no time at all to get this far in life,
yet it seems like it takes forever to get to Friday?
