Needing the game disc to play the game.

It's a DRM tactic (Digital Rights Management). The game publishers used to do this all the time as a means to ensure you have your own copy of the game. You had a CD key(sometimes) and you needed disk 1 in the drive. It was to prevent you from giving it to a friend to install. Back then the keys were not registered with a company server as not everyone had internet and it just wasn't done. CD writers were also not very prevalent and CD-R media was expensive. This was 10+ years ago and has tapered off since.

I've noticed this much less lately with the increase in downloadable games and most games require you to register an account with the publisher and activate the key to your account. This restricts game play to your key on your account, so the requirement of using a CD as a form of DRM is almost nonexistent. With Steam, Origin, and different app stores the need for disks is pretty much on it's way out the door.
