im going to get a new system in a few days (Athlon xp 1800, Asus a7v333, 256 mb ddr 266 (kingston probably), Creative Geforce 2 ti) and now im deciding about the cooler for the cpu. im between volcano's 7 and 7+. Whats the real diference between they? only the speed selector? Also i want it to be a real quiet system. Any advices? Thanks

I hear the 7+ is better, unless you got decent case air flow and then the 7 will stay at low Rpm = pretty silent.

My 7 runs at 3460 average, and I drilled a hole on the heat sink big enough to put the temp sensor in it. So now it goes by the sink temp instead of case temp.

cpu XP1600+
mobo a7v133(a)
fans 2x120mm 3x80mm 1x90mm, 1x80mm on cpu, 2xchipset and video

temp at this moment (using crappy asus probe), mobo: 29C/84F cpu: 38C/100F

I'm thinking of connecting all my case/cpu fans to that sensor and see if the box goes silent or not. Just no clue if it would take it or just pop & smoke, I'm always changing something so it might happen and will see.

Having owned both (now sticking to the 7+), I can say that 7+ is much better. The heatsink is 100% copper (vs. aluminum), and gives much better heat dissipation.

The 7 has a larger fan, and unless you put 5 fans on your case, you'll always have the fan running above 4000 RPM because of the thermistor speed control (and it's rather loud).

After swapping for the Vol 7+, my CPU temp dropped 3-5 degrees, while in still in 'LOW' speed setting (~3300 RPM), which seems about 1/2 as noisey as the Vol 7 (which usually ran at 4000 rpm!)

The 7+ seems worth the money if you want less noise.
