I am thinking about buying a P4 Northwood 1,8Ghz with the Asus P4T -E mobo and PC-800 rdram (heard something about Rd-ram not being good for overclocking? Can that be right?). Will this be a good combination for an overcloking? How much will I be able to overclock it, with standard cooling? And if i was to be other "cheap" cooling for better overclocking, how much better would it be and what cooling should i buy?
Another thing... as you can hear, im not that much into overclocking, but i've sometimes heard people mention that you have to be lucky, to buy a cpu which is good for overclocking? So if I just buy it, I propably won't be able to overclock that much? Is that right ?

Seem's like you guys are pro overclockers, so I hope you come up with som good answers :)

Yeah the RAM is already quite high and wouldn't be as good for ocing. DDR RAM may be slower but has much more potential for overclock than RDRAM would. Get like some PC2700 CL2 and you should be fine. is that 1.8 GHz a northwood? If it is it should easily get to 2.2... Maybe get a good HSF like a sunflower or something...

If I should use DDR instead of RD, I am going to need a different motherboard? Any recommendations? An what do i need to get i running 2,4-2,5 Ghz stable without too much noise? :) If that is possible ?

A HSF is a Heatsink and Fan. <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=62&manufactory=1379&DEPA=1" target="_new">These</A> are some good examples of what I'm talking about. Be sure to get a 478 pin version of the Volcano or it won't fit with your P4. Four quite nice MBs are the

<b>"GigaByte GA-8IRXP,i845 chip 6P1A3D USB 2.0 ATA133 RAID ATX"</b>,

<b>"MSI 845 Ultra-ARU Intel 845 P4 DDR **USB 2.0 & ATA-133** Socket 478 ATX MOTHERBOARD"</b>,

<b>"GigaByte GA-8SRX P4 333 Plus SiS645"</b>

or if you're going to need such a fancy board, a <b>"Soltek SL-85DR-C INTEL motherboard (P4) Socket 478"</b> would do nicely.

You can find some info on these boards <A HREF="http://www.giga-byte.com/products/8srx.htm" target="_new">here, </A><A HREF="http://www.giga-byte.com/products/8irxp.htm" target="_new">here, </A><A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=280&manufactory=1314&DEPA=1" target="_new">here, </A>and <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=280&manufactory=1312&DEPA=1" target="_new">here.</A> Hope that helps.

I'm pretty sure all of these work with PC2700. The higher end GigaByte and MSI boards are quite useful for ocing. The buses are able to be o/ced incremetally and are excellent boards. <A HREF="http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/mainboards/shootouts/p616aboards/index.html" target="_new">This</A> is a good site to show you some good ocing boards. I dunno about that ABit board though. Some of the boards I recommended use pretty advanced tech that will keep these boards useful for longer. What is your budget for a MB? That way I can help you better.

I did a bit more research and while the Intel i845D doesn't support PC2700, when you o/c, it should run close to its stock speed. Ex. If you bought PC2700 which would be 333DDR, you would run it at 266DDR but say you oc your bus to 150 which would equal 300DDR, you would be fine. If you would prefer to have DDR333 support, you would have to go with a SiS645 Chipset motherboard, such as a <b>EPoX EP-4SDA+</b> <A HREF="http://www.epox.com/html/english/products/motherboard/ep-4sda+.htm" target="_new">here</A> and <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=280&manufactory=1318&DEPA=1" target="_new">here,</A> or a <b>AsusTek P4S333</b> <A HREF="http://usa.asus.com/mb/socket478/p4s333/overview.htm" target="_new">here</A> and <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=280&manufactory=1315&DEPA=1" target="_new">here</A>. These m/bs aren't as expensive (around $100US) as the MSI 845 Ultra-ARU, but they also don't have USB 2.0 as some of the extra goodies.

For the memory, I would recommend Corsair XMS RAM. They are awesome for o/cing. Either the Corsair PC2700 XMS 256MB DDR (part # CMX256A-2700C2) or the Corsair PC3000 XMS 256MB DDR (part # CMX256A-3000C2). The PC2700 is about $100 on pricewatch.com and the PC3000 is about $120 at the same place. The reason I say the PC3000 is because they are exceptional when oced as you can see on that site I gave you. I personally don't really understand why, but.... the benchmarks are pretty reliable.

I don't know much about casing, but I do know that if you're going to be ocing, get one with good air ciculation. That power supply may be a bit low, maybe get something with a 350W power supply since you're gonna need it for the video card plus ocing. The GF4 need a 300W plus if you're gonna oc, get something higher just to be on the safe side. The RAM all have lifetime warranty, but you know if you oc them, it will void the warranty. Hmmm, if you have any more questions just ask.

I might take it a step farther. In about 2 weeks asus p4s533 is going to come out (based on the sis 645dx). There you have the option of using pc3200 ram, which is almost the same cost as the pc 3000. In addition to that you might want to think about getting an Ipanel with that asus board so you can see your current temps, voltage, fbs, etc.

Yeah I saw that board on Asus' website and I was like "Sweet mother!" but when I looked around for it, I couldn't find it. Yeah that would be one great m/b if you could geet your hands on it... hehehe
