Print failures since installing XP SP2

I have an HP PSC 500 connected to an XP Professional system. The system has
worked perfectely from the time XP was installed. Since upgrading to XP
SP2, my printer seems to become inoperable from time to time. The printer
will work for a few days, then for no obvious reason, everything I try to
print fails. I have to reboot system to get the printer working again.

I have completely uninstalled the printer, removed every possible driver dll
and then reinstalled using XP SP2 drivers. The problem persists.

Has anyone else seen this issu? Is there a resolution?
