There are a lot of posts on this cooling section that address this issue.

You can use anything you want. 80mm, 92mm, or larger.

My questions are...

1. Did you already buy this heatsink?

2. If not why did you choose it?

3. If you have already purchased it, why without the fan?

4. Noise levels?

5. Do you intend to overclock?

6. What processor is this for, AMD of course, but which one?

I can help you choose a fan if you did purchase the Swiftech MCX462, but if you didn't I would persuade you to a different solution.

Well you said MCX-462...That is for an AMD Socket 462.

For a P4 I would use the Swiftech. But I would do it this way...

The Swiftech MCX-478BU (heatsink only), a 92mm grill, 4 sheet metal screws, 4 fan screws and a Panaflo 92mm fan.

Items...

1. <A HREF="http://www.swiftnets.com/mcx462.htm" target="_new">Swiftech MCX-478BU</A>

2. <A HREF="http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/appliance/pdf/fba09a.pdf" target="_new">Panasonic(Panaflo) FBA09A12U</A> It is a 92mm fan with the following stats. (35dBA, 56.8CFM, 110 grams, and is 12V) You will have to find it somewhere on the net <A HREF="http://www.electritek.com/store/fanspana.html" target="_new">or here</A>.

You could stay at the same store on the net and get the Sunon KD1209PTB1-6A which is also a 92mm fan. It's <A HREF="http://www.sunon.com.tw/index_en.htm" target="_new">stats are 37dBA, 51CFM, 108 grams, and is 12V</A>. (<A HREF="http://www.electritek.com/cgi-bin/ss/sb/order.cgi?storeid=electritek&dbname=products&itemnum=1694&function=show&prevlocation=http://www.electritek.com/store/fanspana.html&testcookie=on" target="_new">Order page here</A>)

3. As for the sheet metal screws...Hardware store.

4. As for fan screws...they should come with the fan or find them <A HREF="http://www.inflowdirect.com/noname.html" target="_new">here</A> or elsewhere on the net or at a local store.

5. For the 92mm Grill buy it <A HREF="http://www.inflowdirect.com/92mmfanguard.html" target="_new">here</A> or the same as above.

For a step by step guide to retrofit a 92mm fan to a 80mm base <A HREF="http://www.2cooltek.com/retro.html" target="_new">look here</A>.

For anyone reading this...

Swiftech as of 05-10-2002 is using one part number for the MCX-423, MCX-462, and the MCX-478. It is the MCX-462-U. Why they changed it I don't know...They just did. So Jack, you are correct in calling it the MCX-462-U.
