Using Dell AIO A920 printer with XP/SP2. Black ink level was down to 10%.
Ordered new cartridge but not yet installed. Ink level now showing 100%. Any
input would be appreciated. TIA.

Don't you know how much printing you have done in the past with
the black cartridge installed? If you've done a lot of printing it should not
be 100%. You are the best judge. You can check in the Control Panel
under printers and faxes properties of your ink level but for some printers
the readings are only approximates. If in doubt, replace it.

I know the exact number of pages printed with the cartridge. The post
(perhaps not clear enough) was to ascertain the type of error involved and
any remedies.

If you open the clamp which holds the cartridge in place, the
setting will go to full. Do not open it until you are ready to
change the cartridge.
