Hey!

What is the best strategy to take when overclocking your video card (in terms of which to do first, memory or core, increments, and all that stuff)?

All things must surely have to end...

Well, I'm only speaking from a logical point of view but I'd start with the memory. When I tried my had at o/c'ing my CPU, I started with the FSB (this increases mem speed as well as bus on my mobo), then went to the multiplier setting. So, I figure once I get a better video card, I'll follow the same order: 1st o/c memory then o/c GPU (ok, maybe it's better to say adjust settings of each). Just remember to put the settings back to normal before starting with the second item. This will give you an idea what your limits might be and you'll be able to find the "sweet spot."

It depends on the graphic card. Some don't benefit too much from GPU overclock, and usually all benefit from memory overclock.

So, simply run 3DMark2001 and a pair of games and see the results from:

a) 10% increase in memory, 0% GPU
b) 10% increase in GPU, 0% memory
c) 10% both

You will see where is the best overclock and if it's worth.

Note: overclocking your CPU/FSB you can also affect the performance in games, specially with not top CPU's. It's another possibility.

I look at the type of card. If you have a GF2 or older series of card, then you want to OC memory big time. If you have a GF3 or ATi radeon you will benefit most likely from both a core and memory overclock, but generally, as everyone here says, memory overclocks always do you good.

try in increments of 1mhz all the way till it wont be stable any more with the core then do the same with only the ram leaving the core at its highest.
