I want some reasonably comprehensive information on what the differences
between dot4, lpt, com & usb printer ports are. Also I want to know why
sometimes XP uses the dot4 port for a HP Laserjet printer (not
multifunctional) instead of LPT1.

Does anybody know where I can find this out? I haven't had much luck
web-surfing for some reason.

Try the HP website... it's specific to HP printers.
