You can buy Nero Burning Rom for like $50. Or, you can buy a 48x42x48 CD-RW Drive for $48 that comes with Nero for free. I just thought that was pretty amusing.
I bring this up because I was just shopping for a new burner. When I put a Metallica CD in the drive to RIP it, it actually crashed the computer. And I mean crashed. It froze, and on reboot Windows wouldn't load, and I had to use System Restore to go to an earlier system setting. I thought that was strange. I figured it was my crappy old 8x4x32 CDRW drive that has always sucked, so I decided to buy a new one.
I finally chose a Samsung 16x DVD, 52x24x52 CD-RW combo drive, with Nero included. All the reviews I read said it was pretty good, and for $85 it sounded like a steal. Anyone have this drive or a combo drive, and what do you have to say about it?

If you can wait for few days, you can buy LiteOn 48x/24x/48x/16x combo drive. It will cost only $50 to $60.
If you can't wait, then go for Samsung SM-348B. It's just the 48x/242x/48x/16x version of your picked drive, and cheaper. Not to mention, 52x has no benefit over 48x

Thanks for the idea.
I was going to buy a plain old CD-ROM for a computer I will be building soon. But I might as well buy a new CD-RW drive for my computer and use the older 16x10x40 drive from my computer in the new computer I will be building.
I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier.
A full version of Nero Burning Rom 5.5 was bundled with my Asus 16x10x40 CD-RW drive I bought last year.
I also have an Asus 16x DVD drive. It was bundled with the crappy WinDVD3x which does not work with WinXP Pro SP1.
Oddly it works fine with WinXP Pro or Home without SP1 installed. InterVideo has a fix for the problem but want to charge you for the download.
As a good little boy I tried to pay for the updated software. But their credit card verification engine refused to accept my purchase because I didn't use my full name in the ship to form. And to be curtious assholes they froze the purchase funds from my available credit on my card. It took a week before the funds were released back to my available credit.
Now my system has CyberLink PowerDVD.
Fvck You InterVideo. I hope the Cocksuckers go bankrupt.
Oh man this thing works great!!! My old burner, although it was 8x, would NEVER burn at 8x, and would only do 4x max, which was really gay. I put some old CDs in there and it hit 24x speed, burned a full audio cd in 3.5 minutes. My old burner took 20+ minutes! I'm gonna go tomorrow and get some high speed media, and this thing should rock ass!
And the Nero that came with it was Nero 5, Nero Express, Nero InCD, and some other stuff.

if you enter a new serial for nero 5.5.x.x or nero enterprise ( keygens available where ever files are traded ) it will convert the express version to either the standard or enterprise version depending on the type of seril an enterprise serial will likewise "upgrade" the usual release of nero to the enterprise edition

new burners are so much fun aint they? Just wait till you get some 48x capable media And my liteon can handle heaps of protected cd formats using clonecd
