hi there my 1800 is working at 54celcius is this normal sems like it wont live long at this temp its not even overclocked

I don't know if you are referring to an idle or a full load temp, but the temperature that you stated is not a problem for the 1800XP. According to AMD, thermal failure would not occur until 90C is reached.
Generally speaking, if you are not experiencing any lockups, then the temps are OK for your system.
My 1800 generally idles at 41C and hits 49-50C under a heavy load. That said, you may have some other case cooling/CPU cooling issues to explore, such as replacement of the retail HSF or additional case cooling capabilities.

40c idle and 45 underload for my xp1.6
consider the following if you want 2 keep your temp down
1. install additional case fan ( at least 1 at front for sucking air in and 1 at the back for blowing hot air out )

2. purchase a higher performance hsf

3. use Arctic silver 3 between your hsf and your cpu.
