I am building a new system. I just got all of the new components this weekend.

I would like to keep the Full Tower Inwin Case that I bought three years ago. It has a tray for the mobo. It has room of case fans although it does not have any (aside from PSU).

Components W/ Fans

Dual fan 431 W Enermax EG-465P-VE(FC)PSU
P4 1.8A Chip came with a very large heatsink / fan
Gainward GEForce4 Ti4200 128MB DDR Card has a fan attached

Other Components - Will Use

Pioneer Internal Atapi 16X DVD-Rom Model 106S
CD-RW (not sure of brand)32 X 12 X 40
WD Western Digital "Special Edition" 120 GB 7200 RPM 8MB
Samsung Original DDR333 PC-2700 512MB Chip
ASUS P4S533 Mobo for Intel P4 478 DDR
Voyetra Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
TV Leadtek Winfast TV2000XP TV/FM Multimedia Card
Ethernet Card w/ External RCA Cable Modem
Internal US Robotics Fax Modem

Other Components - Might Use

PCI - SCSI Card (Bought 3 Years Ago)
Firewire Card (Bought Last Year)

I plan to overclock the P4 1.8A chip to 2.4. I also plan to overclock the Samsung Ram to 400Mhz. I may also overclock the video card.

I am sure that I need additional cooling. I do not know where I can get the biggest bang for the buck.

Please let me know your suggestions to improve cooling for this system.

Thanks for your help.

What areas of cooling do you need help with?

1. Case airflow?

2. CPU Cooling?

3. GPU cooling?

4. RAM Cooling?

5. HDD Cooling?

6. Fan selection?

7. Air or water cooling?

I can go on if you like. However you hopefully get my drift. You will probably want some case airflow managment help and the others are discretional.

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry if I was vague. When I posted the message, I hadn't thought through the cooling. I have done more research since my initial post. Please help me to fill in the blanks with the following plan of attack:

CASE AIRLFOW

My case is an IW-Q500 (Inwin Full Tower Case). I plan to add a fan to the front of the case for intake (cage in front of case has just under than 3 Square Inches of space for a fan)and another fan above the PSU at the back of the case for exaust (the area above the PSU is about the size of a PSU - back of the case here looks like swiss cheese).

I am also interested in buying rounded IDE cables to improve airflow. I also plan to use electrical tape or twist ties to reduce clutter within the case.

CPU COOLING

I plan to use the fan & heatsink that came with the P4 chip. However, I woould like to replace the termal intake surface (waxlike substance) with arctic silver 3.

GPU COOLING ???

RAM COOLING

After spending $150.00 on true Samsung PC2700 333MHZ DDR I am strongly considering adding a RAM cooler. Do you think I need one?

HDD COOLING

Given the cost of the 120GB Western Digital 8MB Cache I am also considering a hard drive cooler.

FAN SELECTION

Advice on fan or cable selection would be very helpful, I do not know what brands are best or where I should buy them.

WATER COOLING

I am not looking to add water cooling at this time.

OTHER

I bought my components from Newegg. However, I would like to buy the fans and arctic silver somewhere else (shipping cost seems excessive). Any suggestions would be welcome.

Case airflow:
sounds good to me...but for the rounded IDE cables...those arnt necessary...unless you want to spend extra money....i suggest tucking those cables into an unused drive bay...that works just as well.

cpu cooling:
again....sounds good to me....the thermal paste sounds good too.

gpu cooling:
the one that comes with the card is fine...unless you're going to overclock your card...if and when you do...you can post back here and we'll give you some suggestions on gpu cooling.

ram cooling:
it wouldnt be a bad idea...if you're overclocking that is...if you are...then you might wanna consider thermaltakes active memory cooling kit...it goes for around $10 i think.

HD cooling:
at 7200 rpms...a HD cooler wouldnt be a bad idea...at http://www.newegg.com</A>...they have an enermax HD cooler for about $6.

fans:
enermax, panaflo, and possibly antec fans are good...nuff said.

other:
i think you should stick with newegg for cooling products...mainly cause they have everything...
if you want come other suggestions...heres a couple:

Thanks for the information.

I used electrical tape (69c) and folded IDE cables twice at 1 1/4" intervals. Not quite rounded cables but pretty close and alot cheaper.

GPU is a Gainward GeForce Ti4200 128MB. It has a fan attached. I will probably overclock it. Is the attached fan sufficient?

I will most likely order my fans from Newegg. It would be nice to save on shipping if I could find the parts locally. Their shipping charges for large items are pretty good but it is frustrating to pay $4 to $6 for shipping on an $8 fan.

that works...as long as you're not spending money on unnecessay things...

perhaps...see how far you can overclock it with the stock fan...then we'll see what we can do...

lol...i remember seeing a $5 shipping charge for a 1 inch x 1 inch case sticker that costs $1...anyways...newegg is always a good place to buy stuff...you you're comfy with them...then you have no reason to buy from another retailer...

"Sorry if I was vague. When I posted the message, I hadn't thought through the cooling."

No problem...

I suggest that you buy some nice grills and cut out those poorly machined ones. It will increase the the airflow by decreasing the resistance. It is a really nice case.

"I plan to use the fan & heatsink that came with the P4 chip. However, I woould like to replace the termal intake surface (waxlike substance) with arctic silver 3."

You can do that. You probably don't need to however. It is up to you what you want to do.

"GPU is a Gainward GeForce Ti4200 128MB. It has a fan attached. I will probably overclock it. Is the attached fan sufficient?"

pr497 says...
"perhaps...see how far you can overclock it with the stock fan...then we'll see what we can do..."

I agree. Wait and see. Here is a picture of the Gainward. Now it only has a heatsink over the GPU and ont over the RAM. So you would probably have better results with a heatsink covering the RAM as well. But see how far it will go first.

"After spending $150.00 on true Samsung PC2700 333MHZ DDR I am strongly considering adding a RAM cooler. Do you think I need one?"

No. If you want to go ahead and be my quest. It will help but the results will be minimal. Any extra cooling will generally help. The cooler a circuit is the lover the internal resistances of that circuit.

"Given the cost of the 120GB Western Digital 8MB Cache I am also considering a hard drive cooler."

You can put one on, but again you probably don't need to. (Same idea with lower heat and better performance in a circuit.)

Tell us what else you wan to do and we will be more than happy to assist you in locating parts for specific specs you want.

I just place an order with Newegg.

I ordered:

80 MM Thermaltake fan (Intake)
90 MM Evermax fan (Exaust)
6 Grams of Arctic Silver 3

$35.00 for the parst $14.02 for shipping.

I will start with these fans and see how my system works.

I can always add more fans later.
