i was just given a compaq presario 5185, i want to upgrade th processor but
i dont know what the motherboard will support. its running with an amd k6 2
processor with 256mb of ram

Forget it. You have a K6/2 380 right now and the board can only go up to a
K6/2 400, not worth the effort.
