Rather than buy rounded IDE cables (30 bucks?), I bought some electrical tape from Radio Shack (69c). I folded each IDE cable twice and added tape at 1 1/4 inch intervals. The cables are still somewhat flexible.

I went to COMPUSA last night. I plan to use Artic Silver thermal paste instead of the COMPUSA brand. I am tempted to save on shipping costs by buying COMPUSA fans instead of buying fans online.

Can anyone tell me if the following fans are any good?

COMPUSA and ANTEC case fans 80mm or 92mm
COMPUSA Memory Heatsink
COMPUSA Hard Drive Cooler (3 Fans in front)
COMPUSA Hard Drive Cooler (2 Fans on top)

The fans are inexpensive and ther would be no shipping cost. If there is a fan I could buy elsewhere that would be significantly better than any of the above fans, please let me know.

I would also like to know which it is more effective to have a hard drive cooler that vents vertically (fans on top of hard drive) or horizontally (fans in front of hard drive at front of case).

Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't get any CompUSA brand components that might be vital to your system. I'm getting more at the memory heatsink, though.

What kind of hard drive do you have? I'm asking because you don't really need a hard drive cooler unless your system's really cramped, your room is hot and you want your drives near ambient temps, or you have an IBM 75GXP, 60GXP or 120GXP.

I got an 80mm Panaflo from KDComputers for $4/each, plus 3-4pin connectors for $1.75/each. I went with UPS Ground, since there was no rush. These blow 24 CFM at 21dbA, so they're really quiet.

For the memory heatsink, I think a good retailer to go with with great service is CrazyPC. I know shipping cost is sometimes a factor, but try your hardest to go with quality. You won't be sorry if you do.

Thanks for the information.

My hard drive is a Western Digital 120GB w/ 8MB Cache.

I asked about a hard drive cooler on another thread but no one seemed to know if I need one. I do like in a 2nd Floor Apartment so the room itself will be pretty warm in the summer.

I also plan on overclocking 1.8A pentium to 2.4 and 512 MB 333MHZ DDR true Samsung Ram to 400Mhz.

Please let me know if I will need a hard drive cooler. If so, which one? where to buy?

I'm not sure how high you can get with overclocking, especially in the summer. Plus, you can't plan how high you want to overclock. It'll only go so high, especially with the higher temps of summertime.

If your hard drive is too hot to hold your hand/fingers on it, then you need a hard drive cooler. If it's uncomfortably warm, then you need one as well. Other than that, you should be just fine. Of course, if you want to be safe, then get one. I don't know of any good ones, because I haven't looked for them in the past. Start up another thread asking for recommendations.

Nice hard drive, btw.

Later...

At first I laughed at your subject cause I thought it was a joke... but then again, if compusa fans work, why not? It saves a heck of a lot of time waiting for shipping, and to my knowledge most hard drive coolers out there blow anyway. The best I've seen in a review that had more than a 2-3 degree celsius temp difference was the one included in the koolance system.

This little cathode light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine!

The subject wasn't meant to be a joke. COMPUSA seems to have a fan for everything. They even have their own silver paste. I would rather pay 6% sales tax with no wait than to pay a shipping charge closer to the price of the fan itself to get the goods a few days later.

The problem that I have had is that I haven't seen any posts from those who have used COMPUSA products to cool their computers. Since I plan to overclock, I would prefer not to use unproven cooling products.

After reading the reponses to my threads, I have ordered the following from Newegg.

Arctic Silver 3 6oz
92mm Fan Panaflo
80mm Fan Thermaltake

Including shipping, the cost is close to fifty bucks.

It doesn't seem like I really need a cooler for the memory or the hard drive. I saved money on the IDE cables by using electrical tape instead of buying rounded cables. I will also hold off on case modification until I see how hot my computer is running once I have put it together.

Thanks again.
