OC'ing slower XP's

I'm planning on building a new computer in the next month or so. I don't have a lot of $ to get this done, thought I'd use one of the slower XP's as prices are cheap. I'd like to be able to OC them a bit using stock voltages. Does this add considerably more heat and are the OCing gains equal in percentages on these slower units. Given the latest price cuts from AMD the processors that fall into my budget would be the 1600+, 1700+ or 1800+ Any input would be appreciated.

An AXP 1800+ has the best bang for the buck, in terms of performance and pricing. If you are serious about overclocking, you will probably want to unlock the L1 bridges, although it isn't necessary. Some of the "better" steppings can do 1700Mhz and 1800Mhz respectively. My 1800+ topped about at around 1725Mhz before losing stability.

Its HARDER overallt o OC a 1800+ over lets say a 1700+ or 1600+...i can't say why, just going by experience..

Check out my rig......click on my Name which is my sig.

It's an AXP 1600+ OC'd to 1.660GHz.......not to shabby.... =)

What are you talking about? They all oveclock relative to their stepping, the same as the Thunderbird Athlons. With a decent air cooler, the 1800+ can hit 1700-1850Mhz no problem. My 1800+ hit around 1750Mhz stably with an air cooler. That's a 14 percent overclock, and yours was a 13 percent overclock. Both are good overclocks.

Well I've been running my XP1700 @1640Mhz vs it's stock 1466 for close to a year now. I have the massive MCX462 to help keep it cool, but it's been stable as a rock. Spend what you can afford and push it to it's 'safe' maximum limit. That's about all you can do

 Save heating costs on your home, overclock your PC!!!

My xp1800+ is running at 1667MHz just by overclocking the FSB to 145MHz on the A7v333 mobo. I'm using a Coolermaster Silent heatpipe cpu cooler. I can get to 1701MHz, but it gets "Memory could not be read" or some other erros from time to time when DivXing DVDs. I don't want to increase the voltage or anything now as its a brand new CPU. I'm using 256 PC2100 Hynix memory. I'm planning to replace that wih 512mb PC2700 samsung memory. Then I'll try higher frequencies again.

In a few months when bartons are cheap and I feel that this CPU has earned its moneys worth, I'll replace the fan on the heatsink with my delta 32cfm fan, try to unlock it and see how it goes. For now 1667 is enough.
