Cannot Install Fax Services

Hi

I have had the Fax services running fine on my computer before, however just
recently I had to reinstall my printer drivers and for some reason the
installed Fax also disappeared. In the Add Windows Components screen, the
tick is now missing from Fax services. If I tick the box, it looks like it is
installing the Fax services software, however on going back into the Add
Windows Components screen the tick is still missing and I cannot install a
Fax.

Does anyone know what might be going on here?

The hotfix listed in the first article may resolve the issue also, however,
I've not yet seen any posts that say it does.

Hi

It does not give any message at all - it looks like it is installing the
software, but when it has supposedly completed there is still no Fax
services. If I try to do it from
the Printer and Faxes screen in the control panel, by clicking "Set up
Faxing", a fax icon does briefly appear next to my printer icon, but then
disappears again.

I am using my WinXP CD to try and install it.

Was your original installation of Windows XP from this same CD?
Are you prompted for the location of the installation files?
Have you installed Service Packs since Windows XP was first installed?
What does your faxsetup.log say?

Hi

The original installation was from the same CD. I do not get prompted for
the location of the files (I guess that means that it is not getting the
files from the CD?). I have got service pack 2 installed.

Hey, that answer is mine! Do I get royalities or just a job :)

Seriously though, when I first posted that I was ignored for a bit and told
it's not the answer, so I would appreciate a badge something along the lines
of "do not doubt this man" :) . Secondly I think in my original post I
stated that Microsoft do not recommend doing this, do you know why this is?

Yes, that answer is yours and I've spoken to folks at Microsoft about it.
I'm hoping to get some additional feedback on how it works for others. I
wonder if the hotfix corrects the problem without the need for using
Esentutl.exe; the folks I've spoken to aren't that familiar with Esentutl's
use and/or ramifications and I'm a bit reluctant to recommend something
that's possibly hazardous. FWIW, *I* do not doubt you, I'm *VERY* pleased
someone came up with a fix which I hope becomes an official correction of
some sort.

I know that this is an old thread but I wanted to add my bit.

Turns out in my situation a bunch of registry keys had gotten their permissions tampered with.
... I still don't know why, I suspect Reg Hive corruption or an issue with a dead domain controller.

At any rate, I got to the heart of the matter when I tried to reinstall XP SP3 to see if that would allow the Fax Services component to stay selected in the add / remove programs. It told me that access was denied.

I'd just had an issue the day before with Fax4Word not installing properly. I had to manually add permissions to some registry values in order to delete them (so I could all Fax4Word to recreate the keys).

The Google search for that lead me to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 - When you try to install Windows XP Service Pack, you receive the error message "Access is denied" or "Service Pack installation did not complete"

That essentially had me replace admin permissions on all my regkeys with:

cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

and that did the trick!
