Ok, I am having heart ATTACK. SERIOUS!!! I have a compaq 6000Series Mobo with an customized Nforce Motherboard. I installed an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ cpu which i got from AMD in it with this heatsink LINK:
http://www.taisol.com/cgk760002.html
+ Artic Silver 3. I added 2 more 80MM fans in the case to have better airflow. THe system shows no sign of instability and I left it on running for several days non stop. Then I downloaded SpeedFan and it told me that my CPU is running at 98C!!!!! WTF??!! Then I downloaded Sisoft Sandra 2002 and it showed my CPU temp at 59-65C depend on load. SO WHICH ONE IS RIGHT!!! I Am WORRIED AND SICK!
Please help.

And IF SISOFT SANDRA is rite, is that a acceptable temp for this CPU?

Sandra is right, speedfan is crap. That temp from sandra is what is expected of an 2000+ with stock cooling, yes it's acceptable. Calm down buddy )

Here is a review of the HSF at <A HREF="http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp_p3.htm#cgk760" target="_new">http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp_p3.htm#cgk760</A>, that seems like a decent HSF.

Well I think you are ok, because at that temp you would have burned up by now. That program "speedfan" may have the option of choosing a different probe.
SiSoft Sandra is generally ok, I would suggest you download <A HREF="http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download5.htm" target="_new">Motherboard Monitor 5</A>, this is much better.

More info like room temp, system temp, are you overclocking the CPU voltages or anything?

It seems it is higher than my XP2100+ by over 10C, so it could be better.

room temp is about 24C, no overclocking at all, compaq computer. I installed 2 extra 80MM fans, one on HD and one hanging from the PSU facing the CPU to provide more air. No intake/exhaust fan due to dust reason

This is because 2100+ CPU comes with much much better retail sinks than they're lesser conterparts. Your temps are fine. If your PC runs stable and doesn't crash you are okay and should no longer worry about it. Your CPU (computer for the matter) will tell you if it's too hot by locking up. Sandra was probably decently correct and those temps are relatively normal for higher clocked Athlon XP's.

That certainly won't help and would explain the higher than average temps. But as mentioned, unless you are getting lockups and shutdowns happening it is fine. If you managed to filter the intake air would that help and then you could add an exhaust or do you work in a cement powder factory or something?

Turn the computer off and remove the heatsink very quickly, and stick it to your leg for 1 minute. If the heatsink comes off your leg clean, it's not 90C. If it comes off with skin attached, you have something to be concerned about!

I talked to an AMD tech and he said 100 degrees C is the upper limit for XP CPU's. So your 50-65 degrees is acceptible accoring to technical specs. But... real world performance may prove otherwise. If it's running stable, don't worry about it... if you get lockups, especially when the CPU is under load, you need better cooling.
The 100 degree C limit is the max... which means, beyond that, and the CPU will most likely go up in smoke... as a general rule, the lower the temp, the better... except in an extremem condition where you're pouring liquid nitrogen in your computer to cool your CPU to -130 degrees C or something stupid like that.

Max thermal temp is 90 C for Palomino's, 85 C for Thoroughbred. Scroll down to page 33 of 96.
