No, the Volcano 7+ is better than the Volcano 9 in most respects.

The only real deficiency of the Volcano 7+ is a less sturdy clip attachment to the socket.

As cakecake says, the volcano9 has the smart fan with the temp probe which adjusts the fan speed according to the heat range. I have the V7+ with the manual 3 speed switch and I find it very good on the low fan speed setting on a XP2100+ CPU.
I am planing on buying the <A HREF="http://www.thermaltake.com/products/dcfan/a1357.htm" target="_new">"smart fan"</A> and installing it onto the V7+ HS.

I just bought a SmartFan II and installed on my Thermalright SLK800 - put the thermal sensor under the cpu - the wires are thin enough to fit between the pins. Very happy with it - runa about 3000rpm under full load - temperature of about 48C.

It does scream when neither the thermal sensor or the variable resistor thingy are attached - but then so it should moving 75 CFM or something.

I will give it a wirl, thanks for the info.

Do the wires lift the cpu of the socket much?

They lift the cpu a millimetre of so out of the socket - nothing that seems to affect the operation of the chip though.

I've had it running for about a week now (not constantly but about 8 hours a day) off the thermal sensor and no problems - and thats with the CPU under full load all the time, busy running Distributed Folding after got bored with united device's cure for cancer.
