Compusa had a sale on a Hercules Fortissimo 7.1 making it $29.99, so I went out and bought one cause my lil bro's computer is in sore need of a sound card (the 7 year old ESS sound card doesn't cut it anymore). Anyways, I'm wondering which one to use in my comp- which has better sound quality- the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 or the Hercules Fortissimo 7.1? Certainly seems as if the Hercules has a weaker signal as my speakers need to be on louder to attain the same volume....

Woah!! The Hercules is amazing in IL2- I can hear every gun fire precisely, and it sounds totally different from the crapped up dumb sound from my Creative Labs which apparently couldn't handle all it all! Now when things hit the water the splash and I hear all the part hit, etc. Awesome!! And in terms of the power, it was my mistake, a few windows settings took care of it.

The hercules kicks the live's behind anyday. I have the live it's good but quite old now. And i was about to suggest checking the options for the power, i had the same prob when i bought my live. It actually sounded weaker than my yamaha opl3sax ISA based soundcard

nForce APU kills every other sound card. I'm happy that my mobo has nForce APU

It's officialy, I'm in love with this sound card. There was some song I downloaded some time ago, but it came out with alot of garbled static, so I thought it was junk. I play it with this card, it comes clear and apprently it was just pretty complex, while quality on everything else is enhanced!

Since you're on an AMD 760, you can get a noticable performance boost from nForce2

Eh, maybe, but I don't find a big point. When I do a big upgrade then I'll switch everything out.

I really dont get how a soundcard can remove static voices...maybe your Live! was damaged

Haha, I got a lecture when my parents found out the hercules was better than the live cause I bought the Platinum 5.1 over 2 years ago, for close to $200, so now a dinky little $30 sound card woops it.

As a little side note...Creative still makes some awesome sound cards though. The Audigy 2 has been getting some extremely favourable reviews. My old computer's SoundBlaster PCI128 decided to die on me a couple of week ago! As soon as I'm through with school projects and exams, I'll probably go out and buy an Audigy 2 Platinum for my P4 system and put the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in my Athlon.

You guys must've done some real screwing up with your cards. Mine;s also a Live and it still roxx. I've hooked it up to my Sony stereo system and you should listen to the sound when i turn on all the "ear candy". It's awesome in games. So papasmurf here's some consolation "IT STILL ROX"

I've got a live as well, but I don't think it's all that great. Sure, it sounds good in CS and what not, but I get much much better sound if I just use the digital passthrough for DVDs and let my receiver decode the ac3 stream. Of course, it's DD/DTS, so it's gonna sound good that way, but it still beats the crap out of anything my Live comes up with itself.
