Good article.. I am new at overclocking. Im trying to overclock a 1700+ and the article said that I cant change the clock multiplier with out unlocking my CPU... Is this true? Thanks for your time.

Hang in there. It can only get better!

yes you have to unlock the processor to change the multiplier but you can still change the front system bus to a certain limit....

I was wondering is there anywhere I can find a guide to unlock the throughbred B core on the new athlon xp's 2700+ and up?????

this is true. you have to use "shady" methods to unlock your multiplyer. not really worth it unless you know what your doing IMO, because you could fuxxor your CPU or mobo real quick

_____

i had a Duron 1gig with a morgan core, and i believe its the same as the others for unlocking the multiplyer.. that core is exceptionally good for overclocking.. i got my 1gig up to 1.3gigs by turning up the FSB to 133. if i had of bothered with the multiplyer i have every confidence that it would have reached 1.4gig or even 1.5. thats crazy for such a cheap proc. the Duron morgon was an exceptional chip in its day

What is Bump x???

What does that mean?

ANd another thing, I've heard that the 1600+ is the best over clocker.

Could someone possibly let us know which the next best one is, and the one after that :)

If the 1700+ isn't one of those, then how good is the 1700+ at over clocking?

Cheers.

They are 'bumping' up this older thread because it can help new OC'ers and keep away irritating question we get here with the same question a douzen times a week.

The XP1600+ AGOIA is a good OC'er. But the T-bred XP1700+ and XP1800+ are very good OC'ers too and come factory unlocked.

How can you tell if it's T-Bred? I'll be getting a 1700+ soon so do I need to check it, make sure it's a T-Bred? What other types are there?

And you say I don't have to unlock it either? i.e. go through Tom's video with the selotape (scotch tape) and all that?

Thanks.

It looks like all T-breds from XP2200+ and lower come factory unlocked.
Yopu have two different cores for the XP1700+: the old Palomino which has a square core, and the new T-bred which has a rectangle core.

OK I see now, but still just wondering....

If the XP1700+ has Palomino core, it needs to be unlocked as in the THG video.

If the XP1700+ has T-Bred core I don't have to do anything and can start changing the multiplier straight away.

What advantages does the T-Bred have over the Palomino if any?

Thanks.

The t-breds has a 0.13 micron core and thus generates less heat, it also runs at a lower default voltage. And they OC pretty good... you should be able to push them to 166MHz FSB without lowering the multiplier.

Nice, so I'll definitely want to go for a T-Bred core but......OK BUT I'm still wondering....

If the XP1700+ has Palomino core, does it need to be unlocked as in the THG video.

If the XP1700+ has T-Bred core I don't have to do anything and can start changing the multiplier straight away???

Am I correct?

Yes you're correct and that is why I didn't mentioned those differences again.

Yes you are RIGHT!
I have the TbredA XP1700+. its nice.

1. it runs cooler
2. it runs at a lower voltage
3. the multipliers are unlocked, no messing around with the bridges. Just go into the bios and set what you want.
4. Lots of OC potential. Mine is running 11x167fsb @ 1.7v very well.

this helped me. I'm going to try an o/c my 1700 on a a7n8x not delux. Wish me luck. My first time overclocking. Oh, what a moment.

Which motherboard are you using and what RAM please? ALso could you tell me what you're memory timings are set at? Cheers.

Mobo is a Epox 8K3A+ (Via KT333)
Ram is 1 stick of PC3200 Cas2.5 512Mb corsair.
Memory timings are all set to maximum speed.
